The Paternal Lineage test only works on biological males. Due to the Y chromosome being hereditary and passed down from father to son relatively unchanged over time (females do not have a Y chromosome). This test is limiting in that it cannot pinpoint the exact relationship between the two males that share a common paternal ancestor. It only determines whether two males share the same paternal Y-STR marker. However, the test is helpful in excluding certain males from an alleged biological relationship.

How is a Paternal Lineage DNA (Y-STR) test done?

When you order the easy at-home Y-STR Paternal Lineage DNA test kit from Validity Genetics we will be delivered to you by First Class USPS Mail (FedEx Next Business Day available). Our kit will contain oral (buccal) swabs for each person that will be participating in the testing. The DNA samples can be collected at home by rubbing the oral swab on the inside of the cheek. When you are done, mail it back to our accredited lab in the enclosed prepaid envelope for processing .
