Discreet DNA Testing to Determine Identical or Fraternal Twin Relationships
When traditional DNA sample collection isn't possible, our Forensic Twin DNA Test offers an alternative way to determine whether two individuals are identical or fraternal twins.
Using DNA recovered from personal items such as toothbrushes, hair with roots, or clothing, forensic twin testing can help answer questions about biological twin relationships without requiring a conventional cheek swab from every participant.
At Validity Genetics, we work with accredited laboratory partners to provide confidential forensic DNA testing using non-standard samples.
If both twins are available and willing to provide cheek swabs, a standard Home Twin DNA Test may be a simpler and more affordable option.
What Is a Forensic Twin DNA Test?
A Forensic Twin DNA Test, also known as forensic twin zygosity testing, compares the DNA profiles of two individuals to determine whether they are identical (monozygotic) or fraternal (dizygotic) twins.
Unlike traditional twin DNA testing, which uses cheek swabs collected directly from each person, forensic testing allows DNA to be recovered from certain personal items or biological materials.
This option may be helpful when:
One or both twins are unavailable for standard DNA collection.
A twin is deceased or unable to participate.
Personal belongings are the only available source of DNA.
Private sample collection is preferred.
Family members want to determine whether twins are identical or fraternal.
The laboratory first attempts to recover a usable DNA profile from each submitted forensic item. Once suitable profiles are obtained, the genetic markers are compared to evaluate the twin relationship.
Important: DNA recovery from personal items is not guaranteed. The success of testing depends on the quality, quantity, and condition of the biological material.
Identical vs. Fraternal Twins:
What's the Difference?
Identical Twins (Monozygotic)
Identical twins develop when a single fertilized egg divides into two embryos.
Because they originate from the same fertilized egg, identical twins generally share the same DNA profile at the genetic markers examined in standard twin zygosity testing.
Fraternal Twins (Dizygotic)
Fraternal twins develop from two separate eggs fertilized by two different sperm.
Genetically, fraternal twins are similar to other full biological siblings, sharing approximately 50% of their autosomal DNA on average.
Their DNA profiles generally differ at multiple genetic markers.
How Does DNA Testing Tell Them Apart?
The laboratory compares genetic markers from both individuals.
When the DNA profiles match across the markers tested, the results may provide strong evidence supporting an identical twin relationship.
When the profiles differ in a manner consistent with ordinary genetic inheritance, the results support a fraternal twin relationship.
The strength of the conclusion depends on the quality of the recovered DNA and the genetic information available.
Common Reasons for Forensic Twin DNA Testing
Forensic twin DNA testing can be useful in several situations.
Deceased Twin: Determine whether twins were identical or fraternal when one individual is no longer available for cheek swab collection.
Unavailable Twin: Evaluate a twin relationship using a personal item when direct sample collection is not possible.
Family History: Clarify whether twins are identical or fraternal when the relationship was never formally established.
Older Personal Items: Attempt DNA recovery from preserved belongings when standard samples are unavailable.
Discreet Testing: Submit eligible personal items for confidential laboratory analysis.
Forensic twin testing is intended to evaluate twin zygosity, not to establish the identity of an unknown individual or determine whether a particular person participated in an activity.
Common types of forensic samples
What Samples Can Be Used for Forensic Twin DNA Testing?
Our laboratory partners can attempt DNA extraction from a variety of non-standard samples, including:
Toothbrushes
Hair with attached roots
Razors
Used clothing
Cigarette butts
Chewing gum
Dried bloodstains
Other personal items that may contain biological material
Items frequently used by one individual, such as a personal toothbrush, may offer a better opportunity to obtain a single-source DNA profile.
Samples containing DNA from multiple people can complicate the analysis.
Please contact Validity Genetics before submitting unusual samples. Teeth, bones, preserved tissues, and other specialized materials may require separate testing arrangements and additional fees.

DNA Collection Instructions
Step 3: Receive Your DNA Test Results
Once all required samples have been received and checked in, our laboratory partners begin the forensic DNA extraction and analysis process.
Standard forensic twin DNA testing generally takes 5–7 business days after laboratory check-in, assuming suitable DNA can be recovered and no additional analysis is required.
Business days are Monday through Friday, excluding weekends and holidays.
Results are delivered confidentially to the purchaser by email as a PDF report.
Rush testing may be available for eligible samples when arranged before laboratory processing begins.

Forensic Twin DNA Testing:
Frequently Asked Questions
-
A Forensic Twin DNA Test compares DNA profiles to determine whether two individuals are identical or fraternal twins using DNA recovered from personal items or other non-standard samples.
This type of testing may be appropriate when one or both individuals cannot provide a conventional cheek swab.
-
Yes. Twin zygosity testing compares genetic markers from both individuals.
Identical twins generally have matching standard STR DNA profiles, while fraternal twins typically have differences across multiple genetic markers.
The laboratory evaluates the results to determine which twin relationship is supported.
-
Possible samples include toothbrushes, hair with roots, razors, used clothing, cigarette butts, chewing gum, and dried bloodstains.
The success of DNA extraction depends on the biological material present and the condition of the item.
-
Potentially, yes.
If a suitable personal item or preserved biological sample from the deceased twin is available, the laboratory may be able to recover a DNA profile for comparison.
However, successful DNA extraction is not guaranteed.
-
Yes. Determining whether two individuals are identical or fraternal twins generally requires DNA profiles representing both individuals.
One twin may provide a conventional cheek swab while the other is represented by a forensic sample.
-
Forensic Twin DNA testing uses established DNA profiling methods and statistical relationship analysis to evaluate whether individuals are biologically related.
When complete, reliable DNA profiles are recovered, the test can provide meaningful evidence supporting or opposing a proposed sibling relationship.
However, forensic samples may contain limited, degraded, or mixed DNA, potentially resulting in inconclusive findings.
-
Standard STR DNA testing generally cannot distinguish one identical twin from the other because their profiles are expected to match at the markers commonly examined.
Specialized sequencing methods may identify rare genetic differences in some cases, but these methods are separate from standard forensic twin zygosity testing.
-
Our standard Forensic Twin DNA Testing service is intended for personal informational purposes and is not court-admissible.
If you require DNA testing for a legal matter, contact us before ordering to discuss your requirements.
-
Standard turnaround is generally 5–7 business days after all required samples have been received and checked in at the laboratory.
Additional time may be needed for challenging samples or further analysis.
