The Semen Detection Test used by Validity Genetics is a test to detect semenogelin. This test is highly accurate and specific to human semen. It will detect even the most diluted samples of semen or semen mixed with other body fluids. Put plainly, this semen test will not cross react with other proteins or enzymes and will not cause a false positive result. For this very reason it is the semen detection test governmental crime and forensic labs use to confirm the presence of semen on a sample. It is the gold standard in criminal and forensic cases.
The Semen Detection Test will have two possible results:
Negative: Semen was not detected.
Positive: Semen was detected.
Please Note: Semen can be detected by our Semen Detection test, but continued testing may not provide DNA profiles as samples may not have DNA present in a high enough quantity to obtain a DNA profile. This can be for many different reasons. The donor may be possibly vasectomized, oligospermic, or aspermic.
What To Do After Ordering Your Test
After ordering you will be contacted by a Validity Genetics representative with additional instructions and the address to send your samples to. Simply follow the instructions to prepare and gather the your samples.
You will need to send the Special Sample(s) to our laboratory on your own. Depending on what the Special Sample is we recommend placing it inside a paper bag or envelope, please do not place inside a plastic zip-lock bag. On the outside of the bag/envelope please label the following:
the order number (this will be on your order confirmation),
a brief description of the item,
date of the collection,
approximate age of the sample.

The Special Samples should all be placed inside a box or mailer envelope (plastic is fine) and sent to our laboratory. We highly recommend using a tracked shipping service.

What types of items can I use for infidelity DNA testing?
The most common and helpful sources of a DNA test include things that can help prove a claim of adultery. These include samples like:
Used condom
Toothbrush
Feminine hygiene pads
Blood
Stained Sheets
Underwear and other clothing
Hair

Other samples that might contain DNA include things like gum, dental floss, toothpicks, nail clippings, clothing, head coverings (like hats or bandanas), or any other items from which an expert can extract DNA. Contact us to make sure your sample can be used. An additional fee may be required based upon the type of sample submitted.

Special note about old or degraded DNA samples
Is there an old article of clothing, hairs, or other object you swear aren't yours or your partners? Maybe you hid it somewhere and were planning to use it to confront them. Send it to us to test!
Ultraviolet light, extreme temperature and moisture are the primary destructive agents that lead to the degradation of DNA molecules. But, even if it has been a while since you found a suspicious object, degraded samples may still be useful. Because infidelity testing does not require a detailed profile workup, it’s possible that degraded samples can also be used to make infidelity determinations.

Our Semen Detection Test uses RSID (Rapid Stain Identification) technology to detect semenogelin, a protein associated with human semen.
Unlike presumptive screening methods, RSID Semen is a confirmatory immunological test designed to identify the presence of semen on submitted evidence.
Results indicate whether semen was detected in the area tested. The test does not identify whose semen is present or provide a DNA profile.

Your laboratory report will indicate whether semen was detected in the submitted sample, with results reported as Positive or Negative.
A positive result indicates that semen was detected in the area analyzed. A negative result means semen was not detected by the test, although this does not necessarily prove that semen was never present.
If you also want to determine whose biological material may be present, additional DNA extraction and comparison testing can be performed when sufficient DNA is available.

Our laboratory can examine many types of items that may contain suspected semen stains, including:
Underwear, panties, and other clothing
Bed sheets, pillowcases, and bedding
Towels and washcloths
Fabric or upholstery with suspicious stains
Used condoms
Other personal items containing suspected semen
For best results, avoid washing or cleaning the item before testing. Allow damp items to air-dry completely and package each sample separately in a clean paper envelope or bag.
The ability to detect semen depends on the amount and condition of the biological material present.

In some cases, semen may still be detectable after clothing or other fabrics have been washed. However, washing can remove or reduce the amount of biological material present, making detection more difficult.
Results depend on factors such as the type of fabric, washing method, detergents used, and the amount of semen originally deposited.
A negative result on washed clothing does not necessarily mean semen was never present.

No. Semen detection confirms whether semen was detected but does not identify the individual who deposited it.
To investigate the source of the biological material, you may need additional DNA extraction, profiling, and comparison testing.

Semen detection and DNA testing answer different questions.
Semen Detection Testing determines whether semen is present on the submitted evidence. It does not generate a DNA profile or identify the person who deposited it.
DNA Extraction and Profiling analyzes recoverable human DNA, which may come from semen, saliva, skin cells, or other biological material. DNA comparison can then evaluate suitable profiles against reference samples from known individuals.

Business days are Monday through Friday, excluding laboratory holidays.
