What is paternity testing?

A Paternity DNA Test can determine whether or not the tested man is the biological father of the child in question. In our case, this procedure involves collecting and comparing the DNA found inside the cheek cells taken from a sample of saliva from both the child and the suspected father.

This DNA is a unique genetic fingerprint that comprises every persons genes and chromosomes. Both parents pass on half of his and her DNA to the baby. This genetic code, or DNA, is a shared mix of only the mother’s and father’s DNA. By collecting and examining a small sample of DNA from everyone involved, a DNA paternity test can confirm or disprove that the man in question is indeed the biological father of a child.

+ One of the People to be tested lives in a different city or state, can I have a test sent to them?

  • Yes! If the child and father live at different addresses, different cities, or even in different states, we can send separate kits to everyone involved.

In order to send a second kit to another address simply add the Additional Kit/Split Kit add-on to your cart and enter the secondary address in the pop-up fields provided (your address will be entered upon checkout).

+ I am not sure what paternity test is for me, how can you help me decide?

  • Of course! Our team of DNA professionals are here to listen to your needs and help you decide on what is best for you. We have multiple ways for you to get a hold of us. Send us an email from our Contact Us page, chat with a specialist on our Facebook Page via Messenger, or give us a call!

+ Can the results of a home paternity test be used in a court of law?

  • No.

Without having legal identification of the participants in the testing and an impartial third party, or official, witnessing the samples being taken for the test, a home paternity test is not admissible in court.

For Legal Paternity Testing see our Legal Testing Page

+ Can paternity be confirmed before the baby is born?

  • Yes. This would be a completely different test then the Home Paternity Test and require a blood draw instead of the use of an oral swab test.

This paternity test, called a Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity Test, can be done while the baby is still developing in the mother’s womb. This test is conducted only after 8 weeks, though we recommend 10 as every mother and child are different, and involves having a trained phlebotomist draw a blood sample.

+ How much does a paternity test cost?

+ How is the oral swab test conducted?

  • Cells are collected by gently rubbing a cotton swab, similar to a Q-tip, on the inside cheek of the mouth of every person involved in the testing.

See our FAQ for a detailed pictures and instructions.

+ HOW FAST CAN I GET MY RESULTS?

  • Validity Genetics has the fastest turnaround in the industry of only two to three business days for all of our standard DNA collection tests. Your results will be sent to your email within 2-3 business days after receipt of the samples at our laboratory.

We also have Next Day Rush options available.

+ HOW ACCURATE ARE THE TESTS?

  • Home paternity tests are done to the same standards as our AABB legal paternity tests. Our tests are performed in a fully CAP, A2LA, AABB accredited and ISO 17025/9001 certified laboratory. All of our paternity and family DNA testing services follow strict and validated procedures for processing samples to guarantee the highest degree of accuracy. Our testing process looks for 23 genetic markers ensuring you receive 99.99% accurate test results.

DNA testing is generally considered to be the most accurate testing method available. DNA testing can show a relationship between people or disprove any relation with around 99.99% accuracy. Although in some cases this will be represented by a Likelihood Index.
