Helping You Achieve Peace of Mind
Discreet Testing to Determine Full or Half Sibling Relationships
When traditional DNA collection isn’t possible, our Forensic Sibling DNA Test offers a discreet, science-backed way to confirm whether two individuals share one or both biological parents. Whether you're working with personal items like hair, toothbrushes, or clothing, our forensic DNA testing helps reveal the truth, without needing a cheek swab.
If everyone is willing to participate our Home Sibling Test may be a better and less expensive option.
What Is a Forensic Sibling DNA Test?
A Forensic Sibling DNA Test determines whether two people are full siblings (same mother and father) or half siblings (sharing only one biological parent) using non-standard DNA samples. This test is ideal when:
One or both individuals are unavailable for cheek swab collection
The testing needs to be done discreetly
Personal items (toothbrushes, razors, hair, etc.) are the only available sources of DNA
You need to determine parentage through a sibling connection
Our lab uses advanced forensic extraction techniques to isolate and compare DNA from personal items to determine sibling relationships with accuracy and confidentiality.
Common Use Cases
Discreet testing between siblings to check if they share the same biological father or mother.
Confirming family ties when a parent is deceased or missing.
Personal closure for questions about biological relationships.
Using items from childhood or shared spaces, like hairbrushes, toothbrushes, pillowcases, or hats.
Acceptable Forensic Samples
We can process DNA from a variety of items, including:
Toothbrushes
Hair with roots
Razors
Used clothing
Cigarette butts
Chewing gum
Dried blood stains
Note: The success of DNA extraction depends on the quality and condition of the sample. Please contact us to discuss the viability of your specific sample.
*Please note Special Samples do not include: Teeth, Bones, Bone Marrow, Organs or Muscle Tissue, Feces, Paraffin Embedded Tissue, or FFPE. *

Forensic Sibling DNA Testing:
Frequently Asked Questions
-
A Forensic Sibling DNA Test evaluates whether two individuals are biologically related as full siblings or half siblings using DNA recovered from personal items or other non-standard samples.
Unlike traditional sibling DNA testing, which typically uses cheek swabs, forensic sibling testing allows our laboratory to attempt DNA extraction from items such as toothbrushes, hair with roots, and other personal belongings.
This testing option can be helpful when one or both individuals cannot provide a traditional DNA sample, including situations involving deceased or unavailable family members.
-
Our laboratory can attempt to recover DNA from several types of personal items, including:
Toothbrushes
Hair with attached roots
Used razors
Fingernail clippings
Certain clothing and personal belongings
Other items that may contain recoverable human DNA
Toothbrushes are often a preferred sample because they may contain a relatively concentrated source of DNA from the individual who used them.
The success of testing depends on the amount and condition of the DNA recovered. Items containing DNA from multiple individuals may be more difficult to analyze.
-
Yes. Forensic sibling DNA testing can evaluate whether two individuals are more likely to be full siblings, half siblings, or unrelated, depending on the available samples and the relationships being investigated.
Full siblings share both biological parents, while half siblings share only one biological parent.
Because siblings inherit different combinations of DNA from their parents, the laboratory uses statistical calculations to evaluate the likelihood of each proposed relationship.
However, full-sibling and half-sibling relationships can sometimes be difficult to distinguish. Results may be inconclusive, particularly when only two individuals are tested.
-
Yes. A Forensic Sibling DNA Test can often be performed without DNA samples from either biological parent.
The laboratory compares DNA profiles recovered from the participating individuals to evaluate the likelihood of the proposed sibling relationship.
However, including a known biological parent, when available, may improve the strength of the analysis and help distinguish between possible relationships.
If a parent's sample is unavailable, our laboratory can discuss whether additional relatives or alternative testing options may be helpful.
-
Yes. Forensic sibling testing may be possible using a personal item previously used by the deceased or unavailable individual.
Suitable items may include toothbrushes, razors, or other belongings containing recoverable DNA.
The laboratory must first obtain a usable DNA profile from the submitted item before evaluating the sibling relationship.
If sufficient DNA cannot be recovered, testing another biological relative may provide an alternative approach.
-
Forensic sibling DNA testing uses established DNA profiling methods and statistical relationship analysis to evaluate whether individuals are biologically related.
When complete, reliable DNA profiles are recovered, the test can provide meaningful evidence supporting or opposing a proposed sibling relationship.
However, sibling testing is generally less definitive than direct paternity testing because siblings can share varying amounts of DNA.
Results may be inconclusive, especially when comparing full-sibling and half-sibling relationships or when forensic samples contain limited, degraded, or mixed DNA.
-
Our standard Forensic Sibling DNA Test is intended for personal knowledge and informational purposes.
Because personal items are generally collected without verified identification or documented legal chain-of-custody procedures, the results may not satisfy court requirements.
If you need DNA testing for inheritance, estate proceedings, immigration, or another legal matter, contact Validity Genetics before ordering to discuss the appropriate testing process.
We also recommend consulting your attorney about the requirements for your specific situation.
-
Standard Forensic Sibling DNA Test results are generally available within 5–7 business days after our laboratory receives the samples.
Some non-standard samples may require additional processing time if the DNA is degraded, present in small quantities, or difficult to extract.
Results are delivered confidentially by secure email in PDF format.
-
If sibling DNA testing is not the most appropriate option for your situation, Validity Genetics offers several other Forensic Relationship DNA Tests using personal items or non-standard DNA samples.
Depending on which biological relatives are available, you may consider:
Forensic Paternity DNA Testing – Evaluates whether a man is the biological father of a child.
Forensic Avuncular DNA Testing – Evaluates the biological relationship between an aunt or uncle and a potential niece or nephew.
Forensic Grandparent DNA Testing – Evaluates the biological relationship between a grandparent and a potential grandchild.
The most appropriate test depends on the family relationships being investigated, which individuals can participate, and the quality of the available DNA samples.
Contact Validity Genetics if you need assistance choosing the best relationship DNA test for your situation.
