What DNA Sample Types are Acceptable for DNA Testing, and Which Ones Require Approval?
At Validity Genetics, we understand that not every DNA sample fits the mold of a standard cheek swab. Many clients submit non-standard items for relationship or infidelity testing, but not all items are equally viable or safe.
Here’s a breakdown of what we can accept, what needs prior approval, and what we cannot accept at all.
✅ Accepted Samples (No Prior Approval Needed)
Cheek (buccal) swabs
Cigarette butts
Toothbrushes
Ear swabs
Hair with root
Razors
Fingernail clippings
Dried stains (blood, semen, saliva, etc.) on clothing, bedding, or tissues
Chewing gum
Drinking straws
Bottle caps
Q-tips
These items are commonly used in non-standard DNA testing and are typically viable for analysis, especially if stored properly and submitted quickly.

⚠️ Samples That Require Prior Approval
Before sending any of the following, please contact our lab for review. We may be able to accept them, with an additional fee:
Items containing fecal matter (e.g., soiled diapers)
Teeth (extracted or fallen)
Bone samples
Fetal demise samples
Paraffin-embedded tissue blocks
Muscle or organ tissue
These samples often require special handling, extraction protocols, or legal documentation. Our team must assess feasibility and safety before accepting them.
❌ Samples We Do Not Accept
We will not test items that may pose a biohazard or shipping risk, including:
Needles (used or unused)
Items contaminated with sharp objects or dangerous fluids
Anything that may be considered a weapon (these may be tested on a case by case basis)
Any object deemed hazardous to shipping or laboratory staff
Safety is our top priority. We reserve the right to reject any item if we determine that processing it would pose a risk to our personnel or violate shipping regulations.
