If you need to prove paternity for court, enforce your parental rights, or add a parents name to a birth certificate, a court admissible legal paternity test is what you need.
Some of the most common reasons to get a Legal Paternity Test are:
- obtaining Tax benefits for the parent
- establish rights to an inheritance
- adding a parent onto a childs birth certificate
- benefits for the child from both parents - such as life insurance, health care, and immigration
- assist in obtaining custody of a child
- obtaining child support from a parent
Legal Paternity DNA Tests
Legal, or Court Admissible DNA test results are required for clients who need to provide proof of family relationship for legal issues including: trusts and estate planning, child custody, child support, parental rights, court order for paternity, etc.
Legal DNA testing is a very different process compared to home (informational) paternity testing. Testing for legal purposes follow a strict sample collection procedure as well as different shipping and handling method than non-legal testing.
Legal tests also require a stringent Chain of Custody that must be maintained throughout the sample collection and testing process.
At no time will you, the client, handle the DNA testing kit or its contents. Doing so may invalidate the results, and no one wants that.
We do suggest that unless you have an immediate need of a court document proving paternity or a court order ordering a DNA test, most clients should start with a Home Paternity DNA Test.
First steps to ordering your test:
Decide on how many people will participate. Are you only testing a potential parent against one child? Will the mother participate? While we recommend including the mother as it helps to improve the accuracy of the test, but it is not a necessity.
A legal paternity test requires that all participating have their DNA samples collected by an unrelated third party, such as your family doctor, at a medical office or health clinic, notary, or even a coworker -as long as they are unrelated and have no interest in the outcome. You may need to talk with your family doctor or local clinic ahead of time to see if they provide this service. We also provide access to our Nationwide Professional Network of Collection Sites for an additional fee.
After you place your order, we will contact you to arrange a convenient collection site near your home or office using a place you have chosen or one our Nationwide Professional Collection Sites.
All legal DNA kits are mailed directly to the collection site (per Chain of Custody). When the collection site receives the DNA kit they will contact you to schedule a collection time that is convenient for you
How do the Tests Work?
When performing a standard paternity test or maternity test, the tested parties include only a simple oral cheek swab (buccal swab) from the child and the alleged parent.
This cheek swab is used to match the DNA between the child and the alleged father/mother. It is quick, simple, and easy!
After the sample collection
After providing the sample at out collection site the kit will be mailed in a secure and traceable package to our home laboratory in Texas. Our professional laboratory technicians will handle your genetic samples according to the exacting standards set forth by the AABB in preparing and processing the samples for testing. As soon as the results are double checked and verified we will issue a legal document to you, our client.
