What is DNA and Genetic Profile Testing?

What is DNA and genetic profile testing?

DNA profiling used as a unique identifier was discovered in the 1980s. However, the genetic testing as we know it today was not developed until a decade later.

The premise of DNA and genetic profile testing is centered on the fact that (other than identical twins) each person’s DNA is completely unique.

This means that DNA can be used as human identification because of the unique STR loci that exist on autosomes and sex chromosomes within human DNA.

These chromosomes and STR loci can also be analyzed for forensic use and in legal proceedings.

What is a single DNA profile?

While a name can be shared with another person, or a social security number might be stolen as a part of identity theft, an individual’s genetic identity is completely unique.

Our DNA is constant and can’t be changed – unlike physical appearance may change over time. This means that genetic identity can be used as a permanent identifier for every single individual on the planet. DNA, and a single DNA profile, can be used as a unique and reliable form of identification for individuals.

For anyone who wants to obtain a copy of their unique identity, Validity Genetics offers a single profile test and analysis.

This analysis meets and exceeds the strict DNA profiling standards set by the FBI’s Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) and other European DNA profiling rules and systems.

What types of samples can be used?

The single profile DNA test utilizes strict testing procedures. The required samples are usually a buccal swab or specimen collection cards. There are also other sample types possible please contact us if you have any questions regarding usable sample types.

How long does it take?

Validity Genetics offers fast turnaround on our confidential single profile DNA tests, generally available within 2 days of receipt at the lab. Rush one day turnaround is also available at an additional charge.
